Good book on war in public memory but vaguely unsatisfying. Wanted even more on the merging of revolutionary ethos with civil war and aftermath. Perhaps the author has a 2nd book in mind that will carry through the late 19th century and early 20th re Civil War memory and glorification.Enjoyed section on Ft Ti and the Pell Families Pavilion Hotel and the Guilford Courthouse section. Learned many things and considered much in new light. Completely agree with concept that we remember the past mostly in the context of today.The Revolutionary memory has been distorted over time. On a personal local note I live near Lindley's Mill in North Carolina. Site of large rebel vs loyalist battle with in September 1781 it is mostly forgotten and overlooked by the public and scholars alike. Were this battle part of Civil War history we would be holding symposiums about the event. As part of Revolution it does not fit the patriots vs the Brits mold.Topic of public memory and the Revolution needs many more writers.

Chambers traces early American tourism and commemoration at American's pre-Civil War battlefields, arguing that these sites were either largely ignored until the nineteenth century, when they figured primarily as ahistorical and nationalistic supplements to picturesque tourism. In the decades before the Civil War, sectional politics fueled the reiminaging of these sites in both the North and South,centered around the Revolutionary legacy as a useable past. Well-written, discerning and insightful.

This is a review of battleground locations in the US and is not historical research.I knew of the battlegrounds before I purchased the book. The book is not what I expected.
