I am a practicing architect and was really looking forward to having a book with information that I could just keep on my desk, and have open in connection with my laptop for reference... but this book is just sloppy. The measurements are there, but the explanations are often sloppy, half the time that I use the index it doesn't even point to the right page. "Handrails for Stairs" for example, points to page 350, but the information is on page 351. This might sound small, but it's really irritating when you are trying to get things done. I also used the guide for an introduction to seismic strategies and the explanations do not use the same labels as the diagrams... For example the text says "the following images depict both a damaging torsional mode resulting from a horizontal irregularity and a soft story failure resulting from a vertical change in story stiffness"... but they don't label the horizontal irregularity so I don't know what they are talking about, and they don't make any effort to connect which details would be most appropriate in specific parts of the structure. I am not expecting this book to replace a structural engineer, but if they are going to mention this level of detail I do expect AIA to situate and define the terms in this book. The other thing that is sorely missing from this book is a 'catalog of symbols' I am still learning what all of the different disciplines symbols mean, and imply for my own work and all I can do is google each one--- I was really hoping that this book would provide a list of all symbols a drawing set might contain, with brief explanations of each one's relevance to the work of an architect.Overall, I am irritated with the sloppiness of the book, it doesn't consider the reader's experience very well, and the information isn't structured well for assisting work. It feels like the AIA made a list of all the information that should be available to architects, produced a ton of drawings for them, but fell short in creating an index for such a large body of information, and fell short in accounting for people who are learning these things for the first time. For me, this is a huge shortcoming, because I wouldn't be buying a book like this if I already knew what was in it, but the book doesn't do a good job of making that information accessible.

I am an architect and am greatly disappointed by the American Institute of Architects and John Wiley and Sons for publishing such a lousily designed book. The text and illustrations are often buried in the binding gutter. Someone should have gone back to the drawing board before issuing this atrocity. I have yet reviewed the book for deficiencies cited by other reviewers. But I have not doubt that they exist. One should never issue an alpha version as the final version for anything from a book to a set of drawings for a building.I received the book on 10/21/18 and called John Wiley and Sons on 10/22/18 and left a message for someone to call me to determine if I had received a factory second copy of the book. I did not hear from Wiley until 10/28/18 and was told that someone would follow-up on my concern by telephone or email. I have yet to hear from Wiley. I guess I never will. The company used to be known for high quality publications. Now I would not buy a comic book from them. I will keep the book because it is the only one of its kind that I know of, but shame on the A.I.A. and Wiley.

This is a really big disappointment. I held off on 11 because I thought they might fix the problems in this new one. But, no - the drafting quality and clarity is very poor, the page layouts are confusing and cluttered, the binding is like a cheap textbook. I will be selling this and purchasing the 10th Edition until a decent one comes out.

Maybe this one has some updated information but 10th edition packs much more material than 12th.

The font is so small you nearly need a magnifier to read it. The line weights are all the same. Lastly, and stupidly, the publisher did not mind the gutter (the area of the pages near the binding). Therefore, the text and diagrams on the inside of the pages are literally printed in the gutter and not legible. The only difference between this latest edition and earlier editions is information is moved, there is more BIM, and in case you need to know how tall a newborn is when standing up (wtf) and what an infants reach range is, well, it's there. Save your money and buy a gently used older edition.

Just got this the other day. I cannot imagine why anyone would complain about this new edition. It is packed with information and clean, easy to understand drawings. Lots of building details and construction assemblies. I guess I'm lucky that I never owned a previous edition so I'm not all grumpy and nostalgic for the old one. I read some review of it saying that oh Graphic Standards is irrelevant now because people just like to google building details, but I far prefer finding what I need in a well bound, beautifully laid out book than sifting through infinite internet flotsam.

Very, very happy with book!!

Love it
