I've read Black Skin, White Masks plenty of times before, for classes and for my own personal education. The words moved me like nothing ever has before in my life. Fanon, in his own philosophical way, has a mind that bestows upon its readers a message that is both strong and empowering. It is words people feeling lost in the tide of this nation's upheaval need to hear. However, I don't think that this certain translation, this edition has the power to do justice to what Fanon is saying.I first read the "Get Political" edition of this book (which can be found online PDF!) and I was absolutely blown away. It felt closer to the actual French Fanon was using, without the weird accentuations of masculinity and unclear revisions Richard Philcox makes. Richard Philcox takes Fanon messages and completely loses it -- loses all the semblances of powerful vulnerability, precision, and propheticeness that Fanon clearly has in his heart and wanted the world to see. While it is an edition that is easily available to all, I wouldn't use this version if you are going to use it for scholarly articles, or for further contemplation. I would suggest moving to another edition that gets closer to Fanon's actual message. This book is beautiful and has saved my life. But other editions could surely provide much more analysis than Philcox makes possible.
Although it has the trappings of a philosphy book, the overly flowery speech of the original French (translated thankfully), it sadly tells some truths that are still relative in 2017 about how blacks in the Western Hemisphere that are descendants of those brought here during the TransAtlanatic Slave Trade, regardless of if they ended up in Anglophone, Francphone, or Hispanphone nations can relate to if they are conscious and self-reflective. Race relations and human rights have come a long way since Franzt Fanon wrote his magnum opus, but some of the sociological and psychological dynamics have not changed as the same pace as the laws.
Very controversial and right on point with its subject. I'm a realist, so I tend to support realism that is laced with facts. Do not read this book if you are too sensitive about interracial issues because you will not get it. It will blow completely over your head. I found this book to be a great source of research!
I had to read this for class so I suffered through it. It is primarily ivory tower intellectual masturbation. The whole book could be summarized in one chapter. That said it provided some interesting perspective on the author's experience - it just could have been written much shorter.
Fanon wrote what most people could never dare expose. He offered more explanations about racism than many other authors have been able to provide. His experiences are astounding! A must-read!
As a physician, I would never have thought of this in a million years! This guy is a legend! Must read for every black man! Neo Africanism has got to stop!
Interesting read on a man's lamenting on the status of Blacks, intellectually and socially, in their native country, France & U.S. alongside exploitative, and some will view as opportunistic, chances of living unabashed, wherever they may find themselves.
Reading this book has been one the most important activities that I ever done this summer so far. What is remarkable about Damon's writings is the used of a simple language to explain such complexities on colonialism and race relations. Everyone should read this book.
