#17,046 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is the second "book 1" of Will Wight's "The Elder Empire" series. I actually read the companion book, creatively titled "Of Shadow and Sea" first, which, I believe colors my perceptions of this book somewhat. This book follows the opposing point of view from the first book. In "Of Shadow.." we follow Shera, an assassin always looking for her next nap with Calder as one of the main antagonists. In "Of Sea.." this is reversed as we read most of the book through Calder's POV. In both books, there are intermittent flashback chapters that serve to show us formative experiences in the main character's background and help to flesh out the world building that Wight has done, and done pretty well I think. Just like I said in my review of "Of Shadow..", these flashbacks are very similar to the "Stormlight Chronicles" flashbacks in that they tend to build towards an event that is obliquely referenced in the "present time" chapters and is dramatic and shocking. I will say that, in both books, I thought I knew what the event was going to be, and in both cases I was about half wrong. This format is very interesting because of the conflicting points of view. I suppose they could have been interwoven Game of Thrones-style, but having two separate books means that you have your perception completely molded by one book before starting the second instead of gradually built up by switching in between the two. This is reflected, I believe, in some of the reviews for "Of Shadow.." that I read in which people who read "Of Sea.." first seemed to have lesser opinions of Shera and the Consultants than Calder and his crew. I wouldn't say I'm completely opposite, but I am inclined to support "Team Shera", if such a thing exists. More than anything, the two books illustrate what happens when people have to act with limited knowledge of the oppositions goals and motivations. Both books are set in a world of humanity that, until recently, had been completely united in an Empire ruled by a long-lived and powerful Emperor. The death of the Emperor has thrown the future of the Empire into chaos with some factions wanting to maintain the status quo, some wanting a new Emperor, and some wanting a dissolution of the Empire. While the commoner may have little opinion on the matter, we observe the machinations of the different Guilds: sanctioned groups of specialists who have different powers and purposes and different goals and visions for the crumbling Empire. After reading both books, my conception of which side is "in the right" and what solution is correct is predictably scrambled. It will be interesting to see how things come together as the series goes along. Its hard to rate one book after reading both. Wight continues his penchant for irreverence (realistic?) depiction of his characters that I enjoy. I think the world building is solid and complex, and the magic system is interesting and fairly well thought out and explained. I'm not sure what differentiates a Reader from a normal person (midi-chlorians??) but it's fine. I wouldn't describe these books as "moving", but they are a lot of fun and I'm hoping the next set doesn't take too long.

Will Wight is pretty well known, but mostly for Cradle and the Traveler's Gate series. Deservedly, as those are both great. That said, my favorite series by him (and his favorite, incidentally) are the Shadow/Sea books.I won't go into a ton of detail at the moment, but they feel deeper and more complex than his other stuff. The characters are wonderful, the action is fantastic (as it always is with him), and the world feels more grounded than in his other novels. The series has a gimmick, though, and it's one that I was highly skeptical of going in. He pulls it off, though, in spades. It's actually two series that occur concurrently, from the perspective of two opposing characters who are on opposite sides of a conflict. The storylines weave back and forth, into and out of each other, and seeing the same scenes from a different POV is a fascinating experience. Putting the characters on opposing sides keeps it from being a rehash of stuff you've already read; if the characters had been on the same side, it would have been hard to make the second viewing of the scenes interesting. But what really hooked me were the characters, and how he makes you love or hate them by turns. When you read a book from the Shadow series, you find yourself viewing the characters of the Sea series as the enemy, and root against them and want our heroes to triumph. Going into the concurrent book, I found myself wondering how the hell he would make me care about characters who'd been the antagonists for an entire book. But man, he does.Calder and Shera are both fascinating characters, and you really care about both of them. The supporting casts are great, too, with Calder's cobbled crew a standout in the Firefly, banter and badass way. They're great books, and I found that reading the first of each series before moving onto the seconds worked really well for me. They have issues, some pacing stuff and such, but they're definite 5 star books for me.And it's basically impossible not to love Urziah. You'll see.

Of Sea and Shadow was a very entertaining book that combined an energetic plot with a great deal of action and interesting characters. I read this book first rather than its companion book Of Shadow and Sea because I've always been a pirate fan and I was not disappointed. I really enjoyed how the main character and captain, Calder, (no spoilers) interacted with his crew and how their crazy personalities bounced off each other. There is a really new and different magic system that retains just the right amount of mystery (to avoid over-explanation) and clarity. My favorite aspect of the book was it's ability to both develop characters and not get bogged down in too much detail that often plagues some fantasy books. Overall it's a fantastic story that moves quickly and leaves the reader wanting more. I would highly recommend it.

TCP/IP Illustrated: v. 3: TCP for Transactions, HTTP, NNTP and the Unix Domain Protocols (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series)

From the Back Cover

Praised by reviewers and practicing TCP/IP programmers alike, the TCP/IP Illustrated series examines the many facets of the TCP/IP protocol suite using a unique and highly-effective visual approach that describes the inner workings of TCP/IP with detail, insight, and clarity. Volume 3 provides detailed coverage of four essential topics with which today's TCP/IP programmers and network administrators must be thoroughly familiar: T/TCP (TCP for Transactions), an extension to TCP that makes client-server transactions faster, more efficient, and more reliable; HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), the foundation for the rapidly expanding World Wide Web; NNTP (the Network News Transfer Protocol), the basis for the Usenet news system; and UNIX Domain Protocols, a set of protocols used heavily in UNIX implementations. As in the previous two volumes, the book is filled with examples and implementation details within the 4.4BSD-Lite networking code. The TCP/IP Illustrated series provides a complete picture of the protocol suite that drives the Internet, and gives programmers, system administrators, and serious users the information, understanding, and skills they need to remain at the forefront of networking technology. 0201634953B04062001

About the Author

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of noted author W. Richard Stevens. His passing is obviously a tremendous loss for the technical community, but it is a personal one for us as well. Rich was both a gifted colleague and a valued friend who will be greatly missed. We extend our sympathies to his family. Obituary from the Arizona Daily Star: STEVENS, W. Richard, noted author of computer books died on September 1. He is best known for his "UNIX Network Programming" series (1990, 1998, 1999), "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" (1992), and "TCP/IP Illustrated" series (1994, 1995, 1996). Richard was born in 1951 in Luanshya, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), where his father worked for the copper industry. The family moved to Salt Lake City, Hurley, New Mexico, Washington, DC and Phalaborwa, South Africa. Richard attended Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Virginia. He received a B.SC. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1973, and an M.S. (1978) and Ph.D. (1982) in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona. He moved to Tucson in 1975 and from then until 1982 he was employed at Kitt Peak National Observatory as a computer programmer. From 1982 until 1990 he was Vice President of Computing Services at Health Systems International in New Haven, CT, moving back to Tucson in 1990. Here he pursued his career as an author and consultant. He was also an avid pilot and a part-time flight instructor during the 1970's. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Sally Hodges Stevens; three wonderful children, Bill, Ellen and David; sister, Claire Stevens of Las Vegas, NV; brother, Bob and wife Linda Stevens of Dallas, TX; nieces, Laura, Sarah, Collette, Christy; and nephew, Brad. He is predeceased by his parents, Royale J. Stevens (1915-1984); and Helen Patterson Stevens (1916-1997). Helen lived in Tucson from 1991-1997, and Royale lived here in the early 1930's attending Tucson High School while his father was treated for TB at the Desert Sanitorium (now TMC). The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Richard's name to Habitat for Humanity, 2950 E. 22nd Street, Tucson, AZ 85713. A memorial service for Richard will be held at St. Phillip's in the Hills Episcopal Church on Tuesday, September 7th at 12:00 noon. Following the service there will be a reception in the Murphy Gallery of the Church. Please wear colorful clothing to the service; Richard loved colors. W. Richard Stevens was an acknowledged UNIX and networking expert and the highly-respected author of several books. He was also a sought-after instructor and consultant. 0201634953AB04062001

Stevens's writing is a model of clarity and conciseness, but there's little here to interest anyone today, unlike volume 1 or even volume 2. The bulk of the text is devoted to T/TCP, which never really got adopted outside of the BSD's, probably because of its security issues that later arose. The section on HTTP is brief and only covers HTTP/1.0. NNTP is little more than a historical curiosity today (and only warrants a few pages here anyway, so I'm not sure why it got cover treatment). The treatment of domain sockets is decent, but if you have AUP or Stevens' Network API books, you have a better treatment already.

another great book by Richard Stevens.

I bought this book to complete my network set. I have volume one and two and the unix programming book.

Very good quality. The book looks like new

Excellent transsaction

After having read volumes I & II, I felt compelled to read volume III in spite of other customer reviews here. Having just finished this one, I'm inclined to agree with the other reviewers - interesting, but not as earth-shattering as the first two. The first half of the book covers, in volume-II style detail, an implementation of T/TCP for BSD; although this is interesting, it's not very practical, since T/TCP never caught on in the real world. The next part of the book covers HTTP & NNTP, but doesn't go into much detail; if you know what HTTP & NTTP are, you probably already know all the material covered in this book. Finally, the book ends by examining the BSD implementation of the Unix domain sockets. This last bit was the most relevant part of the book, but don't even think about trying to read this if you haven't completed volume II (and have it handy - the text refers back to specific pages and diagrams from Volume II). If you've read the other two books (Volume II in particular), you'll want to read this one to round out the experience, but don't expect to be blown away like you were with the others.

This book covers a need distinct from the first two volumes - the first two covered the core protocols' internals, while this one covers the application level protocols - a subject hardly covered by any other book.I've found this book very useful for understanding T/TCP, a subject my teacher did not explain well and was obscure for me.The NNTP & HTTP cover was useful, especially as I was doing a lab on HTTP, but I must admit that as far as HTTP goes the RFCs were sufficient.

If you are planning on writing any software for the web, this is one of the books you need. This book covers T/TCP, HTTP, NNTP, and more including UD Protocols and some good info in the appendix.W. Richard Stevens has never let me down with any of his books, and this one is no diffrent. Its too bad hes not around to write books any more, alot of people will be missing out on great books from a great author. This is a must have!!

Johnny Cash: The Life and Legacy of the Man in Black, by Alan Light

Review

“Johnny gets the spotlight in Alan Light’s The Life and Legacy of The Man in Black.” —Billboard“If you have time to read only one book on Johnny Cash this year, Light’s Johnny Cash: The Life and Legacy of the Man in Black should be the one you pick up. The stories are familiar, and many are told in other biographies, but these photos of Cash, his family, and his artifacts bring him and his music to life in a way that no other biography so far has been able to do.” —No Depression“This book is an admirable work of loving and careful research and Light handles facts efficiently. He is a remarkable scholar whose understanding of American music history runs deep. Johnny Cash continues to have a strong influence on music today, despite his passing 15 years ago. His story continues because his music still lives among the people.” —All About Jazz“Almost biblical with his deep baritone and stoic demeanor and all dressed in black, Cash was an authoritative figure, honest, serious, moralistic, and outspoken. Signed by Sam Phillips and Sun Records, the label on which Elvis Presley was getting attention by mixing black and white musical styles, Cash soon found listeners with his signature “boom-chicka-boom” sound, recording such hits as “Hey Porter,” “Cry! Cry! Cry!,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “I Walk the Line.” As a singer and guitarist, he introduced a darker, rawer, bleaker sound to rock ’n’ roll as well as a humanist element, speaking for the disenfranchised, in song and in life as he championed convicts, Native Americans, and the underprivileged. Music journalist Light deftly ties together all the different strands of Cash’s life, his recording career, groundbreaking television show, battles with substance abuse, marriage to June Carter Cash, and late-life revival with the American Recordings sessions. Aided by interviews with Cash and others and an abundance of photographs and artifacts, this biography will be a good companion to Robert Hilburn’s Johnny Cash (2013).” —Booklist“A profusely illustrated volume documents a celebrated performer's struggles and hard-won triumphs. Veteran music journalist Light (What Happened Miss Simone?: A Biography, 2016, etc.) offers an admiring yet cleareyed biography of Johnny Cash (1932-2003), a composer, singer, and guitar player who crossed many genres. The author draws on Cash's autobiographies, music history and criticism, interviews, and writings by Cash's family to produce an intimate and engaging portrait. By far the greatest strength of the book, though, are the illustrations: memorabilia from family archives and abundant photographs that capture Cash's undeniable charisma. A treat for the Man in Black's many fans.” —Kirkus Reviews“Working with the Cash family, Light (The Holy or the Broken) has gathered hundreds of never-before-seen photographs, lyric sheets, posters, and other artifacts from the Johnny Cash archives to produce this stunning and lavishly illustrated biography of the Man in Black. Light’s rich collection of photos and narrative bring Cash to life.” —Publishers Weekly“There can never be another Johnny Cash. With close-up images and the big-picture story, this book offers new insight into the life of an American hero.” —Sheryl Crow“This resonant book offers far more than an overview of Johnny Cash’s life and legacy: it gets to the very essence of who he was and what his life and music mean. Light’s text reads beautifully and stands as an ideal complement to photos that inspire reveries about the works and days of this extraordinary artist.” —Anthony DeCurtis, author of Lou Reed: A Life“‘Johnny Cash was like Abraham Lincoln to me,’ John Prine once said. We all agreed, though if Prine had said the same of Elvis or Sinatra, we wouldn’t have, because it wouldn’t have made a damn bit of sense. But with Cash it did. He was a man, an idea, a morality, a way of looking at the world. Though wrapped in contradictions, Cash always stood tall, like he’d come out of the soil, one of nature’s inevitabilities. This book gives us an intimacy with the man. And that’s an accomplishment worth celebrating.” —Warren Zanes, author of Petty: The Biography

Bought this as a birthday present for a friend who is a huge Cash fan. This book came shrink wrapped so I was unable to view the inside of the book prior to my friend opening it, but the cover was beautiful. After my friend unwrapped and opened it, I was able to see the quality of the book. The photographs inside are great. It’s nice that the pages of narrative are broken up with this candid photos from the Cash family archives. As for the book itself, my friend said it’s great. He’s read Cash’s biography more times than he can count and he said it was nice to see the story told in a different way. He highly recommends this to any Cash super fans.

Product arrived quickly. It was in great shape with a shrink wrap cover over this hard cover book. The book has a lot of photos. Price was very good in comparison to other offers I have seen. This will be a great Christmas present.

nice book

Christmas gift haven’t read it yet

This is a good marriage of biography and memorabilia. It's a standard coffee table book--lots of pictures, some very famous, but many not seen before--personal family pictures from family photo albums--interspersed with photos of liner notes, letters, etc. with a basic biography of Cash's life winding throughout. Each chapter covers a set time frame and is named with a Cash song (One Piece at a Time, Flesh and Blood, The Man Comes Around, etc.) My favorite feature was a spotlight section at the end of each chapter that did a deep dive into some aspect of Cash's life (his religiousness, his advocacy for Native Americans, his relationship with June.) The general biography really doesn't reveal anything new on his younger life--if you've read any other biographies on Cash or his autobiographies or saw the movie, you probably already know all this. But the spotlight sections provide a more in depth look in these areas. I had no idea that the great love story of Johnny and June had some rocky times that nearly led to divorce, or how truly important the cause of Native Americans was to Cash.I also really enjoyed the final chapters about his working relationship and collaboration with Rick Rubin (the video for Hurt is one of the best videos ever made.) There is a lot of mythologizing about Johnny Cash and his younger life story is pretty well know. This part of his later life is not as well known and so I really enjoyed learning more about that. The book is well sourced, with interviews with Cash's children and various collaborators through the years. It also draws on interviews with Cash before he died and throughout his life.I received a B&W unfinished proof of the book to review so I imagine the final product is probably a little more polished with some color pictures (though the full black and white treatment gives it a sort of haunting air that seems fitting for a biography of the Man in Black.) My one complaint is that the font it tiny! And somehow the Spotlight sections have font that's even tinier that they font used int eh rest of the book. Lol. Get your reading glasses out!

I enjoyed this book immensely. Once I started reading it, I found it hard to stop. The writing by Alan Light achieves the perfect balance of a chronological account of Johnny Cash's life, career analysis, mythmaking, and mythbusting. Along the way are tons of interesting photographs and a few interludes about themes in Cash's life and music.Johnny Cash led a fascinating life and created numerous classic songs and albums. More than anything else, I associate him with his famous prison concerts at Folsom and San Quentin. After that, I think of his late career resurgence, first in his cameo on U2's Zooropa and then of course his American Recordings series. He has a larger than life persona and seems almost like a force of nature. With his deep voice, his extensive catalog of songs of love, God, and murder. His life and music is thoroughly American in a "country" and "folk" tradition. One strength of this biography is that, even as it pulls away some of the myths and falsehoods, Cash comes away as no less of a giant.I love when Alan Light pulls away the veil to reveal Cash as a human being who struggled with drugs, fidelity, and honesty. This book exists for fans, but it doesn't talk down to us or try to pretend Cash was perfect. He's fascinating in his imperfections, and in the integrity he showed when trying to be a good man and follow his beliefs, speaking out for oppressed people and singing of the virtues of faith and family. You don't have to be religious to be moved by Cash's religious songs. The writing is well balanced, and I read it quickly without feeling like I was losing out on details. The author is knowledgeable and is clearly a fan of the musician, so any criticisms of him never come off as judgmental or mean-spirited. The focus is on the events of Cash's life and career, not gossip or revealing dirt on the man. Johnny Cash is a towering figure in music, and this book adds wonderfully to his legacy. I think any fan would be thrilled to add this to his or her collection.

It is a classic for a reason! I was hesitant to get this book at first. Now, I'm glad I got it! I know why a National Master recommend this book to me now.I'd recommend you have knowledge of strategy and basic tactics before going through this book. It's one of those books you'll continue to go back through as you become a stronger chess player.

The best book on attacking in chess. You should probably be 1200+ to read it and up to 2000;but then it can be read over and over, as you'll learn something every time.

I acquired this book when I was ready to take my chess skills to the next level. I was a Class D player (1300s) at the time, and am now a Class C player hoping to break into Class B. The book presents a plethora of scenarios which are fun and challenging. It explains the moves and traps very well. I spent many weekends setting up the hypos on my chess board, and enjoyed every single trap, failure and explanation. Thanks to this book, my chess moves are much more refined than they used to be. Highly recommended.

Solid chess book for developing and using your attacking mindset -which essentially is chess. I would recommend this for uscf/fide1600+ players mainly for the appreciative reasons - at that level you know some tactics and have seen them worked and failed. This book combines positional chess and tactics into one - Attack. Very rich but not massive so obviously several passes may be required to retain the material.

I have recently reviewed a few other chess books here, and along with How To Re-Assess Your Chess, this is the only one of my five recent purchases that I enjoyed and benefitted from. It is one-sided, of course. If you want to know the best way to defend against this or that opening by white, you're outta luck. But it identifies several very useful patterns to watch for, whereby you can knock your opponent for a loop. I felt it improved my game, and was easy enough to understand, for a non-tournament player who probably plays to the 1200 level or so.

Excellent Thanks!

This book belongs in everyone's repertoire, along with Nimzovich's "My System", and Kmoch's "Pawn Power". I would have given it 4 stars if not for the numerous tactical errors, which are corrected in this new edition at the bottom of the respective pages by the editor. It would have been better if the original prose had simply been altered and overwritten with the corrected analysis.

This book is a super-classic, though no exercises to test, this does not matter,as this is not just a book of puzzles and so no need to give exercises for you to solve. In fact it is a bible of attack. After reading this book, your attacking power would be much, much improved and when solving those puzzles by John Nunn, Gallagher, combination motifs, manual of combinatioin etc, those previous difficult puzzels you cannot solve, may now be seem to be easy to you!!! Just look the the numerous reprints, so can have an idea how great this book is!!!! Now with the book in Algaebraic system, then there is no excuse not to buy it!!!!!!

My Friend Michael: An Ordinary Friendship with an Extraordinary Man, by Frank Cascio

From the Back Cover

Everyone knows Michael Jackson—the myth. This is the revealing true story of Michael Jackson—the man.To Frank Cascio, Michael Jackson was many things—second father, big brother, boss, mentor, and teacher, but most of all he was a friend. Though Cascio was just a few years old when he first met Jackson in 1984, at the peak of the pop star’s career, Jackson was at the center of his life for the next twenty-five years, allowing Cascio to observe firsthand the greatest entertainer the world had ever seen. In that time, he became the ultimate Michael Jackson insider, yet remained publicly silent about his experiences. Until now. In My Friend Michael, Cascio refutes the rumors, lies, and accusations that have accumulated over the years, providing a candid look at the Michael Jackson he knew for more than two decades. Offering an uplifting and definitive account of the legend, Cascio details how he grew up alongside Jackson, traveling the world with him on concert tours and eventually working for him. Through this lens, Cascio captures Jackson’s most private and tumultuous moments, while also setting the record straight on the entertainer’s notorious and misunderstood lifestyle—from his Peter Pan reality and his sexuality to the false allegations against him. As Cascio shows, there was a great deal more to Michael Jackson than the headlines about him have suggested. Cascio reveals his friend in all his complexity, bringing to light his passions and joys as well as his flaws and eccentricities. Including stories about Jackson that have never before been made public, Cascio creates a balanced, human look at the pop star, one that shows Jackson as the very real person he was—a lively friend with an endearingly juvenile sense of humor. What emerges is a clear-eyed yet deeply respectful portrait of Jackson—a man who was at times unremarkably average but also terribly scarred by his life in the spotlight. Packed with never-before-seen photos, anecdotes, and insights, My Friend Michael is a trove of Michael Jackson lore that both celebrates his life and redefines our understanding of the man behind the myth.

This book is so hard to read. Its wonderful in ways that show us inside Michaels life but its hard to see him cry and hurt so much because of others. Its not fair for anyone to suffer such pain. I believe Michael was born 20 yrs to soon. Everything they had issues with him then is perfectly common now. For petes sake a man can become a woman and get an award for it. I'm 34 never listened to Michael much growing up coming from a country based family but a few months back on youtube the 93 deposition of the Girl is mine played on my auto and I listened to him. No matter how they tried to rope him he was kind and pleasant and respectful. he kept is composure at all cost. I listened to him for hours just talk, soothed by his voice and reminded of humanity but his personality. I believe my favorite thing to hear is him create the rhythm. When I run across clips of him beatboxing everything around me goes still. This book is the first I've read but wont be the last though I am limited to only read ones I believe to be real not someone writing to gain money from his life, seems a lot do that. While I am sure Frank made a nice dime off this book its classy and real. Im about 80% done with the book but I have to keep stopping because the sad parts mess my whole day up, my heart goes out tho a man who no longer feels any pain. I believe Michael was as innocent as they came and this world couldn't handle that. We live in an awful time where people bully those who they don't understand and it was at its worst with Michael. I am not a crazy fan but a devoted listener. I love most of his music some I cant understand but most I enjoy. I read to understand him more and enjoy the insight I am finding. This book explains so much. The 2002 MTV award was a bunch of BS, like seriously how did his manager tell him this was the award he would receive then Brittany just happened to call it out that way in his speech? SORRY. MTV is a bully, I don't watch it anymore I've outgrown it but I wouldn't watch now knowing this is the nasty games they play. Well back to the book. lets see what happens in the end!

I was cautiously optimistic about reading My Friend Michael by Frank Cascio. On one hand, I had to wonder why a loyal lifelong friend of Michael's would break his silence to write a book about a friendship that had successfully been kept secret for over 20 years. But the more I delved into it, the more apparent it became that Frank Cascio's intentions were rooted in his lifelong devotion to his friend. He wanted to share the truth that he experienced first hand, and like any friendship, there were ups and downs. My Friend Michael is very different than any other book about Michael Jackson I've read. To my knowledge, it's the first book written by someone close to the subject who isn't family, a business associate or a slick media hound. Frank Cascio is an ordinary guy who happened to have an extraordinary friendship with a man who was anything but ordinary. This book doesn't sugar coat its subject matter, nor does it place Michael on a pedestal beyond reproach. By contrast, it offers perhaps the most humanizing glimpse into the King of Pop's heart written to date; a man who craved genuine human interactions, yet lived in a world where no one could be trusted. Riddled with paranoia, Michael struggled to have friendships based on genuine, mutual love, as opposed to the shrewd opportunists that populated his life.Michael Jackson wasn't only the most talented entertainer of all time, he was perhaps one of the most complex. It can't be easy to live one's entire life in a fishbowl, with little connection to the daily reality the rest of us face. This book reminds us that Michael Jackson was a mere mortal, like the rest of us, but lived a life beyond the scope the rest of us can imagine. Circumstances like that can't help but skew an individual's perspective on the world at large and how they choose to live their life. Michael may have been a human being like the rest of us, but the similarities veer off sharply pretty soon thereafter. Frank paints a picture of a man yearning to cling to some normalcy while strapped to the rocket ship called fame. It's almost as if Michael's super nova dragged him beyond the stratosphere and all he could do was hang on for the ride along with the rest of us; try as he may to steer it in the right direction, ultimately no one had any control over the trajectory.Frank shares many intimate stories and misadventures he and Michael shared. Through it all, it's clear Michael was yearning to experience an ordinary friendship of inside jokes, childish pranks and genuine camaraderie. It would seem Michael handpicked the Cascios as his adopted family, with whom he could celebrate birthdays, Christmases and family vacations, in ways that he never experienced with his own family. Perhaps it's no mistake Michael chose a family from New Jersey; all American and away from the hustle of metropolitan life, yet not so far off the map to cause Michael much of a detour.Frank details how Michael mentored him as a friend and father figure, teaching him how to create Mind Maps, and to set his goals high without limiting himself. It's a tutelage that I envy. There's no school or lessons in the street to equal that of the University of Michael Jackson; and Frank seemed to graduate King of Pop cum-laude. It's clear Frank learned much from this unique mentor, and that it will serve him for the remainder of his life. And what cool parents Frank had, to allow their children to travel Europe with a man just accused of pedophilia, and essentially allowing Michael to co-parent all of their offspring for over 20 years. I should have been so lucky to have parents like that. The mere fact that the Cascio's trusted Michael to such a degree speaks volumes to his innocence. They weren't brainwashed by Michael; if anything, they were one of the few to see the truth so clearly at a time when the rest of the world had doubts. Frank knew the children and families who falsely accused Michael. He was there, and in many cases, in the bedrooms during the sleepovers. Bottom line, the only impropriety to occur, was accusing an innocent man to begin with.Frank also witnessed first hand Michael's prescription drug problem. To me, it makes total sense that an entertainer the magnitude of Michael Jackson would have a problem coming down after an energized performance, and would struggle to find the serenity to fall asleep. Particularly when coupled with chronic pain, and feeling the responsibility to wake up the next day and do it all over again. No, Propofol was not intended to be used as a nightly sleep aid, but then, the rest of us aren't working a job that pumps us full of adrenaline night after night, nor do we feel the daily responsibility to a stadium full of screaming fans. Yes, in one respect, Michael understandably lived life by a different set of rules, because his life resembled no other. The only thing I fault Michael for with Propofol use was trusting the wrong doctor, and not insisting on having proper medical equipment and staff present. But I imagine it's easy to become complacent when you're the King. Frank Cascio makes it clear that there's a big difference between a drug addict twitching for a fix, and a man suffering with chronic pain yearning for relief. I live with chronic pain, so I can relate to the helplessness and hopelessness that Michael must have felt in that regard. Compound that by having the entire world stare down at you as a pedophile, and it becomes clear the horrific reality that Michael faced on a daily basis. It's no wonder he couldn't sleep. Could you?One of the funniest stories in the book was reading how Frank and Michael snuck into Disney World Paris and explored the grounds after hours. Apparently they even signed one of the Peter Pan exhibits, and I can't help but wonder if there mark is still there to this day. The image of Michael Jackson, the world's biggest star, losing his footing, and falling into a faux lake, waist deep and pouring water out of his iconic fedora, is an image I won't soon forget. And I imagine Frank won't either. It's obvious that Frank gave Michael the one thing he wanted most, friendship. But it's a friendship that was tested on levels few other face. And by the end of the book, it's understandable why Frank's friendship with Michael couldn't help but be strained under the weight of Michael's massive existence. At the end of the day, perhaps there's no way to have an ordinary friendship with an extraordinary man. But Frank and Michael seemed to come as close as they could get.Bottom Line -- Michael Jackson was a human being, first and foremost. If you're prepared to read a book about Michael the person, a man with flaws, feelings and insecurities, then you'll enjoy this book. Frank Cascio made me feel closer to Michael in a way I never have before. So much so, that I felt the loss of friendship right alongside Frank by the end of the book. We all know there's no happy ending here, but continuing to celebrate Michael's life is where the "happily ever after" begins. I think Jermaine's book was more eloquently written, but Frank's fills the gaps that Jermaine's left behind. It's a fascinating read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who'd like to learn a new layer of truth to the humanity that was Michael Jackson.MJ Forever & Eternally!

This writing was so movingly honest. Frank told his story with objectivity in that he exposed Michael's faults with love. Recognizing and conveying with beauty that Michael lived a stratepheric life. This was a life the rest of the world could never comprehend within a mere mortal existence. Michael, as any fan knows, was not mortal in the sense that he had long ago developed strategies, utililizing them to maneuver and cope with a life lived on the moon. This life proved to be unmanagable even for the one and only Moonwalker. This book made me laugh with Frank's dry humor revealing he and Michael's child like antics. And, made me tear up with the confusing and hurtful moments they both endured. An onslaught of events inflicted by life on the moon. An incredibly moving and oddly realistic read.

Frank gives an insight on the REAL Michael. He first saw Michael through the eyes of a child, and that's why I think he's been so loyal to him through all these years. Michael took care of him when he was little, so Frank was a great friend to him later on. They had a wonderful relationship. In this book, it doesn't seem like Frank shares things about Michael he didn't want the world to know. He gave us just enough information where we could understand Michael, but it's obvious he didn't share some things for the sake of Michael's privacy. He kept Michael's girlfriend's identities hidden when mentioning them, he was very respectful. If you love Michael Jackson, this book is something worth reading.

I bought cause of all the good reviews. We get glimpse at Micheal's life thru frank's eyes. Unfortunaly its written in the view of a child's eye. I feel like a 11 year old is telling me this story.
