Loved this book. Think it is very fascinating to have a fantasy book based around tattoos and ink and gaining power with each tattoo received. I enjoyed this book even though questionable story line. The plot is a little unbelievable to me though in the sense that a spoiled daughter of a duke would become a savage mage killing non-stop making at times. Character development not as intricate as some of the recent books I have read but enjoyed the concept and reading the book. Was a nice deviation from typical plot lines of some of the fantasy books I have read recently. Found it a little hard to believe a king would ignore part of his land being invaded and leave it to a young girl to defend her land with the help of just a few others. And the Chamberlain to the king sends the young girl to a Temple of Death for a death tattoo. Good book for a diversion from the usual fantasy book. I did find the book captivating enough to keep reading it consistently to the end of the book.
Great new fantasy series. Gischler has put together a really compelling story that makes sense as the first in a series but also largely (thankfully) stands on its own.None of the characters are complete surprises but they're also far from copies of others. While one character's use of magic develops a bit too quickly and without many consequences, the story otherwise moves without many bumps. Gischler deftly avoids too many of the tropes of the genre and does a few innovating things. While the book doesn't break a ton of new ground, it's fun as all get out. A really enjoyable read in a world with lots of potential (much hinted at throughout) and without any mustache twirling villains. The writing is smooth and engaging. The short chapters are perfect for community or multitasking too.A great debut of an interesting magic system and well crafted (if not overly detailed) world.
I originally started this book awhile ago and it got buried in my Kindle queue. Unfortunately I didn't have the title or author in mind. I would look for it periodically because I liked it and wanted to finish it.Finally ran across it when searching for another title and it was even better than I remembered!I highly recommend reading it. Now to book 2 in the series!
It is well written, good characterisation, good plot.Cons I would have preferred certain elements to be fleshed out more especially the last fight.I felt the cursing although not excessive was unnecessary and so were most of the 'sex scenes' , although not detailed like erotic fiction, some of them did not add to the story.Overall it is a page Turner and I will definitely read anything else the author writes.
The characterization, witty writing style, even the voice actor was great. There was a thorough mix of action and character development throughout the first two thirds or more. However, things inexplicably jumped around toward the end. I wonder if an editor was upset with the length of the story? It felt very rushed at the end. And I was disappointed despite enjoying the read, because there was much more to work through and more characterization left on the table.
A fun tale of fantasy which was exactly what I was hoping for. Don't let the negative reviews deter you. This book is totally worth checking out on the amazon prime reading list.I couldn't disagree more with some of the negative reviews. It seems Victor Gischler's Ink Mage is simply not for some, however, I did go into the story aware that it was originally designed as a release of serials (much like mini stories or even comic books) With that in mind reading the story as a whole, I wasn't thrown off by what some consider to be lurching from scene to scene. I believe the author's approach was not a traditional one, but all in all Ink Mage has proven to be the fun read of adventure and medieval fantasy I was hoping for.
***My final comments don't really contain spoilers, but they it does give you a general idea of how things end, in the sense of whether it was a happy, sad, good, or bad ending. If you don't want to know that much, then skip it. I clearly marked where I go into that.***This is a cool premise to this story. I read it like a whole book, so didn't get it piece meal like some of the people who didn't like it that way. That's the way you paid to receive it, so I don't know why you'd complain about getting it that way.It may have some common tropes in it, but I never understood why that bothered people. If you like something, then you want more of it. How many times do you read a book and hear the line about how 'there are no new stories, just the same old stories, rediscovered with new players.' I like to read new and imaginative stuff as much as the next person, but not everyone can do that and sometimes you just want to read stuff where you know the backwoods farm boy is going to get a bunch of cool magic powers and defeat the ambiguous evil overlord. Also, the fact that the magic powers that come from tattoos is cool and something I haven't personally read, even though I'd heard the idea before.I also read a reviewer who said that they turned their nose up at the book because there were cuss words and sex in it. I agree and disagree with that. Firstly, I don't mind that. I think it's a little weird when a writer will have an army of hardened soldiers who run around saying, 'heck' and 'gosh darnit'. Contrary to many uppity peoples opinions, cussing does have a place in the world. Sometimes regular words just won't do it. I don't think it necessarily makes someone ignorant to cuss, but if it does, then you still need ignorant characters in your world. I will say it's unnecessary for every other word out of someone's mouth to be a cuss word, but I work with a guy who does just that. The only reason I agree that the cursing and sex should probably have been left out of this is because it feels like a middle school - high school type of read. I think adults can certainly enjoy it, but it's kind of like how Harry Potter is classified as a kids book and adults enjoy it. It wouldn't feel right or necessary to have the characters cursing or having sex even though that happens a lot with kids in the age range that go to Hogwarts. It's just not that kind of book. So it would have been better to have left it out.**Possible Inferred Spoilers***The main reason I gave this book 3 stars was because of the ending. It climaxed too quickly. (Double entendre, but not pun intended.) The story is going along just fine and then within a couple of chapters, the main character has everything fall into place without a hitch. It was too convenient. There was no struggle and there were story lines they didn't wrap up. If he plans to write another book, then these can be addressed and it wasn't a bad ending. If this is it, then it wasn't very good. Like I usually do, I suggest you read it anyway, or at least some of it to see if you get hooked. There are plenty of books and tv shows I really enjoyed and would watch again even though they got cancelled or had a bad ending, because as most characters say at some point, 'It's about the journey, not the destination.'
