This story covers what is termed the "Second Boer War" 1899-1902. It focuses on the initial battles in Natal to relieve the British and colonial forces trapped in Ladysmith by the Boers. It is an excellent story of leadership placed in historically accurate situations as British General Redvers Buller learned the hard way that the Boer forces were well armed, flexible, and a worthy enemy. I also recommend reading Winston Churchill's book "From London to Ladysmith via Pretoria". As the actions of the Boer War fade into history, overshadowed by World War I fifteen years later, what was done in South Africa during the Second Boer War should be studied for valuable "lessons learned" that apply equally in modern "bush wars". This story was a lot closer to GA Henty and he did an excellent job making a great story that is entertaining as well as historically instructive. As you read this story, bring up Google maps and look at the terrain of the British colony of Natal where these battles were fought and see the difficulties facing both sides as they battled for control of their territories.
