As a long retired English teacher I wish I had read this when I was still in the classroom. We say we teach "critical thinking" without allowing enough time for the students to practice it, to ask their own questions instead of responding to ours and to engage in the dynamic of oral debate. Sarah Cooper's methods and examples are applicable to many subjects, not just civics, and I highly recommend them and the pleasure of this engaging book.

Teaching Middle School current events is not for sissies, but Sarah Cooper lays out a series of plans and ideas that will keep your kids interested as they grow into an understanding of how the news intersects their lives and the past. Cooper gives you ideas on how to incorporate current events into your classroom, from long-term projects to tips on staying neutral in a heated debate, and shows you how to relate the news to historical events, helping your kids think like historians. Over her many years of teaching, Cooper has found what works and also what doesn't, and freely shares her best moments (and some of her worst).
