I like this as an alternative to textbooks, for teaching history to my children. I think it gives a pretty honest viewpoint, appropriate for children. However, it is a bit dated, so there are some things you may want to pre-read and change, since some of the words are not really acceptable to use anymore.

I always love her books! I wish a few more writers would adopt this format. Like taking a slice off a tree trunk, Genevieve gives her readers the story not only of the key character but of all the world during their lifetime. The pieces of information she incorporates often contain tid-bits I do not find anywhere else. The illustrations (while b&w) are always very well done and eye catching. I'd definitely recommend her books to anyone - particularly those seeking to learn more about a specific time frame and those teaching their children at home. (Note: My son was in 4th grade when we used this book. We read it together. I think an advanced 4th grader could read on their own - but it is probably more a 'normal' junior high level. Also, these books do not 'focus' or downplay / up-play one 'religious' viewpoint over any other. Therefore unless you are seeking purely Christian or purely something else, these books should cause little to no 'issues' on that front.)

As usual, superb work by Genevieve Foster. The book is lively and broad in scope, covering the history of the world during the time of Christopher Columbus. There are a few minor errors, but if you know your history, you will catch them.

Great book! Used it with our History Curriculum and it really helped everyone understand what was going on both with Christopher Columbus and how he was affected by what was going on in the world. Easy to read.
