Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of August 2018: A deep, complicated love between two very different women lies at the heart of Frances De Pontes Peebles’ new novel, The Air You Breathe. Dores and Graça grow up on the same sugar-cane plantation in Northern Brazil, but while Dores is the plain but clever daughter of a lowly worker, Graça is the spoiled, lovely daughter of the house, who demands that Dores become her playmate and accomplice. Their unequal friendship continues as the girls’ passion for samba takes them to Rio and eventually, Los Angeles, where Graça’s voice and Dores’s songs bring them international fame – for a time. Peebles’s story, inspired in part by the lives of Carmen Miranda and lesbian songwriter Chavela Vargas, lightly traces the history of Brazil from the 1930s to the 1950s as well as Hollywood’s prevailing attitudes toward foreign (and female) artists. Her sensitive, poetic writing evokes Brazil’s rough beauty and the sensual lure of the music that shapes Dores and Graça’s lives. This is a gorgeous, immersive novel about a bond so strong that it “is like air – you can forget it exists, and that it is essential to your life.†--Sarah Harrison Smith, Amazon Book Review

The Air You Breathe is a magnificent work of cultural historical fiction and is definitely one of my favorite books of the year. This novel contains all of the aspects I seek in literary fiction: a well-paced plot, beautiful yet clear and engaging writing, and richly drawn characters.Music is a theme that is incorporated into the plot, but The Air You Breathe is really driven by the fascinating journeys of Dores and Graca. I also loved learning about historical Brazil and classic Hollywood while simultaneously being entertained by the story. This novel is completely engrossing and unforgettable. Highly recommended!
Confined my reading to bedtime, but found it difficult to stop and go to bed. Great book, gripping story. I had to exert great will to put it down and go to sleep. Recommend it highly. Could have used some footnotes to explain the slang used as part of the culture, but still worth it. I was completely immersed in the story. How I love a good book!!! I am always so sorry when it ends.😢
This book is a riveting, searing keening about the myriad and intricate ways we demand and need love, like air. The story is unabashed and raw in its emotional honesty. The writing is pure and translucent. The eyes of Dores, the narrator, are unrelentingly piercing. Those who love stories that captivate will not be disappointed. Those who long further—for a narrator who speaks into the complexities of truth, loyalty, foolishness, and hate will find deep reward. This book will make you ache, and will not give you answers. But it will stay with you, and always tell you the truth. A must read.
One of the most original books I’ve read, the book is like a lyric that moves you through so many emotions. It’s beautiful and tragic. One of the best books in my extensive reading list!!
this author has created a beautiful story about the music and the characters whose lives are defined by it. at times their lives mimic the music and at other times, the music is created by the very facts of their circumstances. The author has created characters of complexity, beautiful in their vunerability and totally identifiable by their flaws. i look forward to more from this author
I read this book and then purchased it for my 90 year old aunt. We both enjoyed it so much and saw different things in it due to our different perspectives.
It starts at the beginning and the end.... the story brings you on a journey of life long friends and musicians with Brazil’s history as a backdrop. Loved it!
I liked they way the codependecies & the bisexuality were portrayed
